Comprehensive Immigration Report No. 240
To: Priests, Deacons, Brothers and Sisters of the Archdiocese of Atlanta and Diocese of Savannah
From: Frank Mulcahy, Georgia Catholic Conference, (404) 920-7367 fmulcahy@georgiacc.org
Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals Finds “Sanctuary Cities” Policy Unconstitutional. The Administration is attempting to restrict or eliminate benefits to local governments that do not sufficiently cooperate with Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers. Similar policies are being discussed in the Georgia gubernatorial election. While a federal court of appeals ruled that this federal policy is unconstitutional, it does not assure that a Georgia court would rule the same way.
Church Offers Respite to Migrants in McAllen, Texas. Sister Norma Pimentel, a member of the Missionaries of Jesus and executive director of Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley, created a place of respite and care for migrants crossing the southern border in McAllen, Texas. Her ministry has been recognized publicly by Pope Francis during his visit to the United States, Notre Dame University and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB).
Interfaith Procession in El Paso, Texas. Interfaith leaders, alongside El Paso Bishop Mark Seitz and other Catholic bishops, led a 900-strong procession through downtown El Paso on July 20 that ended with a candlelight vigil for the plight of migrants and refugees. Across the Rio Grande border from Juarez, Mexico, El Paso has reached out to migrants passing through the city.
ICYMI –Why Would Parents Leave Their Children Behind in Another Country? Allegedly, parents seeking asylum in the United States, but nonetheless deported, have agreed to leave their children in the United States. However, a recent report shows that the government frequently does not ask questions, but just deports. The government’s lack of knowledge makes it even more difficult to reunite parents and children. Catholic social teaching wisely advocates keeping families united, as it is the building block of society.
Clergy Study Day on Human Trafficking
To: Priests
From: Monsignor James Schillinger, Director, Ongoing Formation of Priests
Ongoing Formation of Priests and Justice & Peace Ministries will co-host a Clergy Study Day on Human Trafficking from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 11, in the Grand Halls at the Chancery, 2401 Lake Park Drive SE, Smyrna, GA 30080.
Human trafficking is happening within the boundaries of every parish in our archdiocese. It is modern-day slavery and involves the use of force, fraud or coercion to obtain some type of labor or commercial sex act. It is estimated that human trafficking generates billions of dollars of profit per year, second only to drug trafficking as the most profitable form of crime. It is a $290 million illegal industry in Georgia alone.
Please make time in your schedule to attend this workshop. We will have a panel of speakers, including local law enforcement, who will give you an overview of the issue, teach you about knowing signs to recognize victims and arm you with the skills to minister to those who have been affected by this evil. Our goal is that you go back to your parishes with concrete skills to both raise awareness in your community and to minister effectively to individuals you may encounter.
If you plan to attend, please RSVP to Amanda Hailey at ahailey@archatl.com by Friday, October 5. For questions regarding the subject matter or to schedule a presentation for your parish, contact Kat Doyle, Director of Justice & Peace Ministries, at kdoyle@archatl.com or 404-920-7897.

Please join Archbishop Gregory for a Study Day for local Catholic clergy and lay faithful on Wednesday, October 3, 2018 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Atlanta Omni Hotel, 100 CNN Center, Atlanta, GA 30303.
Archbishop Gregory has graciously invited The Federation of Diocesan Liturgical Commission (FDLC) to hold their 49th annual meeting in Atlanta on October 2-4, 2018. This year’s theme is, “The Body of Christ: A Prophetic Sign of Unity and Concord.”
Each year, the FDLC offers a study day for local Catholic clergy and lay faithful as part of their annual meeting. Archbishop Gregory will be one of the keynote speakers for this year’s study day and will address how liturgy and its minsters can be a source of healing, acceptance and unity despite the divisiveness and harm of racism.
The FDLC consists of members from diocesan worship offices and liturgical commissions in the United States and assists the Bishops Committee on Divine Worship (BCDW) by providing leadership, scholarship and resources to aid in the celebration of the liturgy. Archbishop Gregory is the chair of the BCDW.
