To: Senior priests
From: Fr. Victor Galier and Deacon Christopher Andronaco, Office of Senior Priests
With summer here, many are traveling, and some are doing it internationally. I just wanted to make sure a few points about insurance coverage and other helpful pointers for international travel are clear.
For senior priests who have transitioned to Medicare from Meritain, Medicare does not cover medical expenses incurred outside the United States.
To have medical coverage and related expense insurance while outside the USA, senior priests should consider purchasing Travel Accident Insurance for their trip. The archdiocese does not recommend a specific option and suggests checking with various resources for Travel Accident Insurance. Some include:
- Checking with the travel agent arranging your trip, or
- Check online options through websites such as:
- Clark.com (search for travel insurance)
- insuremytrip.com
Additionally, depending on your mobile plan, you may incur significant non-USA charges if you use your phone/data/texting while outside the US. Some plans include coverage for Mexico and Canada, so check your plan for details.
An “ESIM card” may provide significant savings while providing local service on your cell phone as an option to pay non-US carrier charges and fees under a US mobile plan. The archdiocese does not suggest a particular plan and suggests searching the internet for ESIM Card options.
The office of senior priests will gladly assist with any questions when reviewing options. You may contact us at vgalier@archatl.com or candronaco@archatl.com.
