What is mysticism? Do all religions have the same “mystic heart”? What difference does mysticism make in the lives of ordinary people? These are just a few of the topics we’ll explore at this Interfaith Afternoon Conversation, featuring Gareth Young and Carl McColman. Gareth and Carl have been part of the Atlanta Interfaith Community for many years, and they approach spirituality with a love for storytelling, humor and a rich appreciation for both interfaith diversity and our common ground as a human family.
Gareth Young is the guiding teacher of Red Clay Sangha, a Buddhist community based in Atlanta. Carl McColman is a spiritual director (affiliated with Ignatius House), retreat leader and author. His most recent book is The New Big Book of Christian Mysticism.

The Gospel according to Luke has traditionally been identified as “the Gospel of Mercy.” Throughout his book, Luke weaves together a braid composed of three qualities of mercy: compassion, forgiveness and service. During this retreat, we will reflect upon and pray with Luke’s cluster of parables which highlight the merciful love of God and our call to witness God’s love in our world today and in the future. This is a silent retreat. Guests are expected to maintain a sacred silence throughout the retreat, including at meals, unless otherwise noted.

Pope Francis’s 2015 environmental encyclical Laudato Si’ describes how our Sister, Mother Earth, “cries out to us because of the harm we have inflicted on her.” He asks that we change our hearts and minds in how we view God’s Creation by drawing on centuries of Christian spiritual experience and informed by modern science and its assessment of humans’ impact on our common home. This retreat is a deep dive into creation spirituality from the Old Testament to the Gospels to modern thinkers, focused on examples presented in Laudato Si’. The goal of this retreat is to embrace the Holy Father’s call for an “ecological conversion” necessary for all future generations to enjoy the fruits of the Earth. This is a silent retreat. Guests are expected to maintain a sacred silence throughout the retreat, including at meals, unless otherwise noted.
