We know there is great anticipation, and some parishes have shared that there has been slight confusion regarding the exact day and time that Padre Pio’s relics will be in the metro Atlanta area next week.
The relics of St. Pío of Pietrelcina (“Padre Pío”) will be at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, on Tuesday, October 3, 2017, as part of a U.S. tour, sponsored by the Saint Pío Foundation, on the occasion of St. Pío’s 130th birth anniversary and the 15th anniversary of his canonization.
Holy Spirit Catholic Church is located at 4465 Northside Drive, NW, Atlanta, 30327. www.hsccatl.com/stpio
The relics, which include a lock of St. Pío’s hair, blood from his wounds, a glove used to cover the stigmata wounds in his hands and a part of his religious habit, will be on display and available for veneration from 9:00 a.m. to 6:50 p.m. on Tuesday, October 3.
The Most Reverend Wilton D. Gregory, Archbishop of Atlanta, will celebrate a Mass in honor of St. Pío at 7:00 p.m. that evening.
Relics are physical objects connected to the life of a saint and have a basis in scripture. Catholics venerate – or spend time in prayer with the relics – asking the Saint to intercede on their behalf.
An Italian, Franciscan Friar, Padre Pío developed the stigmata (five wounds of Christ) on his body. Despite experiencing excruciating physical and spiritual suffering for much of his life, St. Pío is beloved for his dedication in the confessional and the many physical healings associated with his intercession. Padre Pío died in 1968 and was canonized in 2002 by St. John Paul II.
All media is welcome.
