2017 Annual Red Mass

To: Priests, Deacons, Brothers, Sisters, Principals and Chancery Staff
CC: Parish Secretaries
From: Paula Gwynn Grant, Director, Office of Communications

The Red Mass tradition began more than 750 years ago in Europe. Its name refers to the scarlet robes of the judges who attended the Mass centuries ago, as well as the color of the vestments worn by those celebrating the Mass.

At the Red Mass, we publicly invoke God’s blessings upon those entrusted with the administration of justice. Ecclesiastical canon lawyers and students, judges, and other legal professionals of all faiths also celebrate the Red Mass to invoke God’s blessings. Since 1995, Atlanta’s St. Thomas More Society has embraced this tradition by sponsoring the Annual Red Mass.

The 2017 Red Mass will be celebrated by Archbishop Gregory at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 12th at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Atlanta. An awards banquet will immediately follow at the downtown Capital City Club, located at 7 John Portman Boulevard at Historic Harris Street.

For St. Thomas More Society Members who have paid their 2017 dues, the lunch is free of charge. For all other attendees of the luncheon, the fee is $45.00. A complimentary luncheon ticket is also available for sitting judges and clergy.

Please RSVP on or before October 2, 2017 by visiting the St. Thomas More Society website.

Please share this information in your parish bulletin, newsletter and in social media. A slide is available for your internal TVs as well as the following bulletin announcement:
