To: All school business managers, parish sports coordinators and parish preschool directors
From: Brenda Leslie, director of financial services, Office of Finance
As you may remember, the “student and sports accident” coverage for the 2020-2021 fiscal year was not billed for several reasons. The impact of the COVID restrictions resulted in lower participation and conduct of the sports programs throughout the archdiocese during the fall of 2020 and the spring of 2021. As a result, claims were minimal, and our self-insurance fund balance was improved by 16 months of very low activity. A decision was made in June of 2021 to not bill for the 2020-2021 fiscal year.
With a return to a more normal level of sports activity, all schools, preschools and parishes with sports programs will receive a bill for the 2021-2022 fiscal year before the end of June 2022. The increased activity level is reflected in our claims experience.
Over the last several years, the timing of the billing for student and sports accident coverage has fluctuated from anytime in November to June. Our goal is to keep the timing of the bill consistent from year to year for your budgeting purposes. We will issue a bill for 2021-2022 before the end of June, which you will receive electronically through Bill.com. Going forward, we will return to a November billing schedule so your next bill will be in November 2022, which is the next fiscal year.
The rates will remain at $13/preschool/elementary school, and $26/high school sports participants. The student/sports accident coverage is secondary coverage, behind a family’s own primary health insurance.
If you have any questions about this, please let me know. Have a great Summer!
