To: Priests
From: Monsignor James Schillinger, Director, Ongoing Formation of Priests
Catholic Extension is offering several mission immersion trips throughout 2020 for priests who are interested in experiencing the Church’s mission on the margins. The mission immersion program is funded with a grant from Lily Endowment Inc., to provide priests with opportunities to see the remarkable work that the Church is doing in the poorest areas of our country. Catholic Extension is inviting participants with an openness to learning to a three day all expenses paid immersion mission trip.
Travel is with small groups, offering priests the chance to step away from pastoral responsibilities for three days to enjoy time with other priests. The Atlanta pastors who have gone on one of the immersion trips are Father Mark Horak S.J. from St. Thomas More Church; Father Vic Galier from St. Anthony Church and Father Bryan Small from St. Peter and Paul. I am sure they would be happy to share their experiences.
Trips planned for the year include:
- Little Rock, March 24-26 (new churches built in growing immigrant communities, vibrant culture of vocations, sisters working on the margins)
- Laredo, April 28-30 (border ministries, ministry to Hispanic youth)
- Lexington, May dates TBD (Appalachian churches, growing Hispanic population)
- Knoxville, June dates TDB (rural ministry in a growing diocese)
- Yakima, late June dates TBD (migrant farmworker ministry)
