To: Priests, Deacons and Directors of Liturgy
From: Patricia DeJarnett, Liturgical Coordinator, Office for Divine Worship
Fulfilling a request of Pope Francis, the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments issued a decree dated February 11, 2018 (Prot. n. 10/18) that inscribes a new Obligatory Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, in the General Roman Calendar.
The new celebration will be observed yearly on the Monday after Pentecost Sunday. The Congregation issued an additional notification on March 24, 2018 (Prot. n. 138/18) that clarified various aspects of the new Memorial.
Click HERE for a link to the USCCB website that provides information on how to celebrate the new Memorial from the Federation of Diocesan Liturgical Commissions; readings and orations for the Mass from the USCCB Secretariat for Divine Worship (pdf version available) and celebration of the Liturgy of the Hours on this new Memorial.
The new Memorial supersedes the rubric at the end of the Pentecost Mass that suggests a Votive Mass of the Holy Spirit be celebrated on the Monday after Pentecost.
Please note that the readings will be proper to the day, not optional. They are slightly different than what is in the Lectionary for Mass (Lectionary Number 1002- I).
